TDM/Rideshare

The Rideshare Etc. program includes a ride-matching service for callers to the information number (266-RIDE), utilizing a computerized database of commuters interested in ridesharing. The number of commuters registered with the program increased by 98% from 2006 to 2008. Program participants are eligible for a guaranteed ride home program, providing transportation home in the event of an emergency. In 2006, Web-based ride matching was added to provide an additional tool for commuters interested in interactively accessing information about potential ridesharing opportunities and other alternative transportation modes. The Rideshare Etc. program service area covers 48 counties in south central Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

MPO staff also provides on-site ridesharing assistance and transportation demand management (TDM) services to major employers in coordination with Metro Transit, the State Employee Vanpool Program, Dane County, City of Madison, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).

In 2008, it is estimated that the ridesharing program resulted in a reduction of 126.4 million vehicle miles of travel (VMT), 10,600 required parking spaces, and 318 and 203 tons of smog-producing nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic compound emissions respectively, and also resulted in savings by workers of over $60.5 million in commuting costs. These estimates are based on a relatively conservative assumption that 39% of carpool matches resulted in actual ridesharing arrangements .
